| Public key infrastructure (PKI) is a relative
complex system that generally involves considerable investments prior to
implementation. While the system is very effective as a way of ensuring
data integrity and communication integrity it is often protected by a simple
password. With a PKI system in place it is more than likely that the data
exchanged between two entities has not been manipulated. However, with password
based authentication, there is only limited certainty that the sender and
the recipient of the communication are actually who they claim they are!

PKI technology and biometrics are highly complementary:
- Biometrics is ideal for verifying a person's
identity
- PKI is ideal for communicating an identity
