November 2001 Newsletter

Welcome to I/O Software's monthly Newsletter, designed to bring you news and information about I/O Software and related authentication industry news.

I/O Software is Technology Partner in SkyD and SkyGuard Projects
The National Air Transportation Security Identification System is planning to use advanced digital identification technology to improve aviation security. The National Air Transportation Association is developing the system as a public/private sector partnership with the support of the Federal Aviation Administration and a team of experienced industry and technology partners.

There are two separate elements of the system: the "SkyD" trusted traveler program for commercial and general aviation passengers and the "SkyGuard" program for trusted flight crews, aviation employees and students. Both programs use NATA smart cards containing digital certificates and signed biometric template information to confirm the cardholder's true identity.

The lead technology partner and systems integrator is Lockheed Martin Information Systems, a nationally recognized authority on security identification systems. They have developed similar systems for the U.S. Dept. of Defense and other federal and state agencies.

Other NATA technology partners include Microsoft, ChoicePoint, I/O Software, Quest, and STS Holdings. The "Proof of Concept" industry partners are Signature Flight Support, Executive Jet Aviation, and Flight Safety International. With the support of these partners and with guidance from the FAA and other federal security agencies, we will begin a 90-day "Proof of Concept" phase on or about January 1, 2002.

Targus Announces Partnership with I/O Software
Targus is developing and marketing a new line of PC security solutions under the Targus 'DEFCON' brand name. Targus' new DEFCON Authenticator will prevent unauthorized persons from logging onto individual PCs and accessing secure corporate and personal information. The product, a silicon fingerprint sensor combined with SecureSuite software, works with desktop or notebook personal computers, is lightweight and easily portable, and is the first of its kind to incorporate a two-port USB Hub.
DEFCON Authenticator's bundled software, SecureSuite, relieves users from having to keep track of numerous passwords and provides maximum protection for notebooks, desktop PCs, and servers containing sensitive and confidential information.

The Targus DEFCON Authenticator will be rolled out to consumers in early January at a price point $119.99, through www.targus.com and www.port.com. The DEFCON Authenticator will also be available through major electronics retailers nationwide.

I/O Software Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation and Vision
On November 9th, I/O Software opened its offices to invited guests from the infosec industry, media, academia and politics to celebrate its ten year anniversary. I/O Software was founded in 1991 by William Saito (far right) and Tas Dienes ( 2nd from right).

November 9th 2001 marked another milestone in the company's long history. While guests got a hands on view of I/O Software's applications integrated with biometric and other advanced authentication technology, the two founders presented a scholarship check to the recipient of this year's I/O Software Technology Innovation Scholarship, James Robertson (2nd from left). Also present at the ceremony was Dean Satish Tripathi (far left), College of Engineering, University of California Riverside (UCR).

The recipient is a sophomore at UCR. He was awarded for a unique engineering approach to a non-biometric algorithm, and he showed great personal initiative through his independent project. The scholarship was created to share I/O Software's success with the community and encourage a new generation of students to pursue their own visions. It is an annual scholarship open to all computer science, mathematics and physics college students in California.

Please visit I/O Software's scholarship page for more information, exact eligibility for recipients, as well as the necessary forms.
